Capercaillie are shy birds and although they live in many of Scotland's forests, you are unlikely to see one whilst out walking in the woods.

The best place to see a Capercaillie displaying is Caperwatch at the Loch Garten Osprey Centre.  Caperwatch runs from April 1st to the end of May and around 4,000 people have visited over the last two years.

This year , Capercaillie were spotted on 41 of the 52 mornings that Caperwatch ran, males on 39 and females on 19.

Remember; if you are in a wood where you think that there might be Capercaillie, they do not like to be disturbed.  Please keep your dogs on a lead, especially during the spring and summer, because even a friendly pet dog can scare or hurt a hen Capercaillie and her chicks.
