Capercaillie are one of Scotland's iconic bird species and
their size means that they require very large areas of good
forest habitat to survive. Although adult birds can
survive in a mix of woodland compositions and structures,
Capercaillie chicks require high quality habitat and are
sensitive to changes in their surroundings, more so than many
other woodland birds and animals. The type of habitat
that Capercaillie require to breed successfully tends to also
be good for Scotland's other native wildlife.

|
For this reason, Capercaillie is sometimes referred to as an
"umbrella" or "indicator" species - this means that
work which is done to benefit
Capercaillie is likely to benefit a wide range of other native species
that live in pinewoods. |
|
Historically Capercaillie have been regarded as a game bird in
Scotland, now land owners and managers are actively working to
conserve and improve habitat for Capercaillie.
